81 POPPIES designer, Michelle Weisman, was born and raised in Houston, Texas. At a young age, she knew that fashion was the path she would take. Growing up, her parents encouraged her creativity. After all, it came naturally – her mother is an artist as well as fabulously stylish and her father, a former carpenter, made some of the most intriguing homes in the Houston area.
Upon graduating high school, she packed her bags and headed for New York. Michelle attended the prestigious Pratt Institute and received her BFA in fashion design. While still in school, she interned for Mint by Jodi Arnold, quickly earning a position as her assistant designer upon graduating. Working under Jodi’s wing for three years, she gained a wealth of knowledge that would launch her into her next endeavor, as swimwear designer at Shoshanna. Within a few months, Michelle’s talent was recognized and quickly was promoted to head designer for the entire Shoshanna collection. For five years she helped grow Shoshanna’s namesake brand into one of the top contemporary labels to date.
In 2008, Michelle decided it was time to challenge herself once again. She convinced her husband, painter K.C. Collins, and their faithful pit-bull/husky mix, Stacy, to take the plunge and move to Austin, Texas. in May of 2010, 81Poppies was launched. The name comes from her birth year, 1981, and one of her favorite flowers that also happens to grow wild in Texas.
The 81Poppies brand personifies modern, feminine, cool and sexy women from around the globe. The collection is a study in contrast, that juxtaposes feminine details and vintage-inspired prints with classic menswear inspired pieces. With her meticulous eye for detail and love for color and pattern, Michelle is dedicated to making clothes that stand the test of time and that make women feel confident about themselves.
